Introduction

A former internet dictionary service engineer (ex-Weblio) will introduce some useful dictionaries.

I actually changed jobs this month, of course, also an SRE engineer at my new job. For those of you who know it for the first time here, I'd like to mention that. Anyway, I wrote that in the article I just posted, lol.

Returning to the topic; So I recommended the dictionary service at the new company and got a bit of a response, so I'm going to blog about it as well.

1. Mouse Dictionary

Getting Started

I highly recommend looking at the Japanese Tutorial first! It’s a very comprehensive document that is concise and easy to understand.

Features

Although no need to explain once you see the above doc… I think it's really great!

• it's great to be able to pull up idioms and such in a jiffy.
• PDF, Youtube Caption, camel, and snake case searches are also supported.
• UI Customized(HTML Templates, Window manipulation) features are great.

Tips

• There are many dictionary data introduced, but Eijiro is the easiest to use! You have to pay for it, but it's only 500 yen, so if you like it, please consider it 👌.

  • It seems that you also can customize it!

• It is not listed in the tutorial or GitHub wiki, but you can customize the UI for size, color, etc. by opening the settings screen (press options from the Chrome extension icon) and opening advanced settings.

2. Weblio Popup English Dictionary

I'll introduce it🫠🫠🫠 Yes………. you can use it using mouse hover! In addition, it is useful because you can register words...!(also, can listen to the pronunciation by pressing the speaker icon)

The words will be registered in your vocabulary book in Weblio's smartphone app and web service, which may be useful for remembering your weak words...!

Unfortunately, they do not have Japanese -> English support, but perhaps some of our competitors' services have it! (e.g. Google Translate(described below))

However, the Weblio encyclopedia also has a Chrome extension!

3. Google Translation

It's Japanese <-> English compatible, so I knew I could count on you...!

4. WordUp

You can search for unknown words with a mouse hover, and it explains them in easy English with gifs.

Then, press should learn to save the word in the smartphone app and learn the word(ref).

Also, If the registered word subsequently appears while browsing, it will be redlined!

But the WordUp extension is quite a browser heavy, so while useful, it may be TOO MUCH...!

Misc

• I don't think anyone will do this, but if you want to search for words including confidential information, you need to check the Privacy Policy Regulation in the web services, so be careful!
• I've focused on English dictionaries this time, but if there is a demand, I'd like to talk about other tools I use for language learning.
